As Director of Prostate and Colorectal Cancers at the American Cancer Society’s national office Dr. Brooks is involved in the development and implementation of strategies to impact the behavior of the public and health care providers around the prevention, early detection and treatment of these deadly diseases. Dr. Brooks has spent much of his career working to improve care for medically underserved populations, both as a direct provider of care and in a variety of administrative roles. He began his career as the medical director of a community health center in Dayton, Ohio and spent 10 years as an assistant medical director in the Community Oriented Primary Care Program at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. His experience in these settings allowed him to developed expertise in a number of areas, including: disease prevention and health promotion; disparities in disease treatment and outcomes; cultural competency of health care providers and systems; HIV/AIDS treatment and policy; and the impact of managed care on vulnerable populations.
Dr. Brooks attended the Wright State University School of Medicine as a National Health Service Corps scholar, and received his medical degree in 1982. He trained in internal medicine and served as chief resident at Wright State University Affiliated Hospitals. He completed the CFHU Fellowship and received an n M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1999. Prior to joining the American Cancer Society, he served a one year Senior Health Policy Internship in the Dallas Regional Office of the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
