The California Endowment Scholars are a group of health care professionals—including physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists and dentists—who, with the sponsorship of The California Endowment, have completed leadership training in minority health policy and public health at Harvard University. The Scholars then bring their expertise and concern about the health of underserved populations to high-level positions in various areas of health care service throughout the state of California and across the nation. In our efforts to improve the health and health care of underserved populations, we have committed ourselves to improve the social determinants of health — income, education, and employment — and work toward social justice in health care through research, education, policy and practice.
Our inaugural California Endowment Scholars Alumni Collaborative event is a capacity building, training session on grant writing. The session was designed for California Community Based Organizations (CBOs) who are working on issues of youth empowerment and youth violence. We have chosen these focus areas because the devastating and lifelong physical, emotional and psychological impacts of early exposure to violence clearly make this a public health issue. These points were highlighted several years back in “Youth Violence: A Report of The Surgeon General.”
Our partner, Public Architecture, is a national non-profit organization based in San Francisco working for social justice in the built environment. Although they are not currently working on any specific youth empowerment projects, the organizational leadership understands the impact of the built environment and the shared public space on creating healthy communities. They have graciously volunteered their workspace to host the event.
Lynn Schuette of Grantwriters Ink, is an independent grantwriter who will lead the interactive training and discussion on identifying funding resources for youth empowerment activities, getting your goals down on paper, and identifying resources for future grant writing assistance.
Dinner, wine and dessert will be served. A networking party follows the training. Please contact any of us should you have any questions and thank you for participating.
